The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced a further extension of the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 by one day.
Taxpayers now have until September 16, to file their ITRs, thanks to the CBDT’s decision to extend the due date from September 15 to September 16.

The CBDT made the announcement through a press note issued minutes before the expiry of the ITR filing deadline of September 15 midnight.

Initially, the due date for filing ITRs was July 31. However, considering the extensive changes introduced in the notified ITRs and the time required for system readiness and rollout of ITR utilities, the CBDT extended the due date to September 15.

To facilitate the changes in utilities, the e-filing portal will be in maintenance mode from 12:01 AM to 02:30 AM on September 16. Taxpayers are advised to plan accordingly and file their ITRs before the extended deadline to avoid any last-minute issues.

This extension provides relief to taxpayers who were struggling to meet the original deadline due to technical glitches and other issues on the income tax portal. The CBDT’s decision aims to ensure a smooth and convenient filing experience for taxpayers.
